Ghana: NCA Updates Type Approval Framework for Telecom Equipment

The National Communications Authority of Ghana has finalized and adopted new Minimum Technical Specifications for telecommunications terminal equipment. These updates establish new testing requirements, formalize 5G frequency allocations, and authorize the 6 GHz spectrum for Wi-Fi 6/6E technologies.

1. Mandatory Local Testing & Physical Samples

The revised Type Approval framework transitions Ghana toward in-country verification:

  • Applicants must submit one (1) physical sample per model as part of the approval process.

  • Submitted samples must undergo mandatory testing at the NCA's accredited laboratory in Ghana.

  • Evaluation will focus on confirming safety requirements and verifying the efficient use of the radio frequency spectrum prior to certification.

2. Official 5G Frequency Bands

To support the commercial deployment of 5G across Ghana, 5G-enabled terminal equipment must now support the officially designated frequency bands:

  • n28 (700 MHz) – Low Band

  • n77 (3300–4200 MHz) – Mid Band (C-Band)

  • n78 (3300–3800 MHz) – Mid Band (C-Band)

3. Wi-Fi 6 / Wi-Fi 6E Spectrum Authorization (5925–6425 MHz)

Following public consultation, the NCA has officially authorized the lower 6 GHz band (5925–6425 MHz) for license-exempt Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E applications.

This authorization directly impacts certification requirements for devices operating in the 6 GHz spectrum, including:

  • Smartphones and laptops

  • Routers and Access Points (APs)

  • Wireless IoT modules and communication equipment

Manufacturers are advised to align their technical documentation and testing plans with the NCA's updated specifications for all upcoming market entries into Ghana.
