The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Egypt (NTRA), in collaboration with Telecom Egypt and Huawei, has announced the successful completion of Africa’s first trial operating mobile services in the 6 GHz frequency band (U6GHz).
This milestone positions Egypt as the first nation in Africa to test this spectrum for high-capacity mobile communications, marking a major leap forward in spectrum management and digital infrastructure.
The trial established the first 6 GHz mobile base station and data call in Africa, achieving peak data transfer speeds of approximately 1.7 Gbps per user.
The 6 GHz band provides the ultra-fast speeds and network capacity required for data-intensive applications, including AI, IoT, Virtual/Augmented Reality (VR/AR), and cloud computing.
Eng. Mohamed Shamroukh, Executive President of NTRA, highlighted that the U6GHz band is a core component of Egypt’s long-term spectrum plan (2030–2035) to optimize national spectrum resources and drive Egypt Vision 2030 goals.
While the 6 GHz band is currently undergoing strategic trial evaluations, this trial signals Egypt’s commitment to adopting next-generation frequency allocations. Manufacturers of 5G infrastructure, IoT systems, and advanced wireless terminal equipment should monitor NTRA’s upcoming spectrum frameworks closely as Egypt prepares its roadmap for commercial 6 GHz deployments.
