Oman Completes Nationwide 3G Network Shutdown

The Sultanate of Oman's telecommunications sector has successfully completed the nationwide shutdown of all 3G networks, officially upgrading them to the more advanced 4G and 5G technologies. This strategic move, which concluded in the second quarter of 2025, positions Oman as one of the first countries to fully transition away from 3G.
The phased shutdown began in the third quarter of 2024, starting with less populated areas. Over a year, the process systematically closed more than 5,600 3G stations across all governorates, with the final phase completed in Muscat. A small number of stations near Muscat International Airport have been temporarily exempted for technical reasons.
By repurposing the freed-up 3G frequencies, the country's telecom operators were able to enhance their 4G, 5G, and IoT networks. This effort has yielded impressive results:
  • 99% 4G network coverage throughout the Sultanate.
  • 90% 5G coverage.
  • Annual energy savings of over two million kilowatt-hours.
This initiative underscores Oman's commitment to improving telecommunications services, promoting digital transformation, and boosting energy efficiency across the country.
