Egypt Embraces Innovation: Updates to Telecommunication Regulations

The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) of Egypt has implemented two key updates to enhance the country's telecommunications landscape:

1. eSIM Technology Rollout

Following successful testing by major mobile operators, NTRA has officially approved eSIM technology. This advancement aligns with Law No. 10 of 2003, promoting the adoption of modern technology for a more convenient user experience and a thriving telecom sector.

2. Updated Short-Range Device (SRD) Guidelines:

The Egyptian National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has announced significant updates to its Short-Range Device (SRD) guidelines, effective November 2024. These changes:
  • New 6 GHz Band: A dedicated band (5925-6425 MHz) with a 250 mW power limit is introduced for indoor applications only. This band follows the EN 303 687 standard.
  • 1880-1900 MHz Band for Radio Microphones: This new band, limited to 50 mW and strictly for indoor use, caters specifically to radio microphone applications.
The main aim:
  • Boost spectrum efficiency: Optimize radio spectrum usage for improved performance.
  • Minimize interference: Reduce disruptions between radio signals.
  • Streamline regulatory processes: Simplify procedures for SRD suppliers and operators.
Impact and benefits:
  • Telecom operators: Benefit from a more efficient and less congested radio spectrum.
  • Manufacturers and importers: Gain access to the new 6 GHz band, opening doors for innovative SRD products.
  • Consumers: Experience improved performance and fewer disruptions from SRD usage.
The NTRA's update reflects its commitment to modernizing Egypt's telecommunications regulations. This fosters a more competitive and interference-free environment for SRDs.
While tighter regulations require additional documentation for product approvals, these measures ultimately benefit all stakeholders. Manufacturers and importers can explore the new 6 GHz band to introduce advanced SRD products to the Egyptian market.
